Burdge says, "I thought, instead of looking directly for the pulsar, try looking for the star that it's cooking." Because of the constant radiation it receives from the Pulsar, the day side is many times hotter than the night side, a property that was instrumental in the discovery of the system. Objects in close orbits tend to be tidally locked, with one side of the brown dwarf perpetually facing the MSP, just as one side of the Moon perpetually faces the Earth. Astronomical instruments cannot directly distinguish between the two objects. The overall brightness of the system goes up when the bright side is facing the Earth, and goes dark when the cold side comes around into view.
One side of the brown dwarf retains heat because of exposure to the energies of the MSP, but the other is remains cool. The periodic dimming is caused by the companion of the MSP, a cool brown dwarf rotating around its axis. The algorithm flagged ZTF J1406+1222, which changes in brightness dramatically, by a factor of 13, every 16 to 20 minutes. Burdge developed an algorithm that automatically scanned the ZTF data for objects that changed dramatically in brightness within a span of 80 minutes.
